The Difference between Drifting and Powersliding / Fishtailing / Burning Out ...........to explain the difference between drifting and other actions like powersliding, fishtailing, and burning out. Many of you who are new to this sport are probably looking for an explination on what people mean when they say "drifting." How is it any different than powersliding, or even burning out? Is it just a loss of traction, or is it something more? As you keep reading this article you will begin to understand that drifting is THE ultimate exhibition of complete car control. Skills you learn while drifting will help you in almost any roadracing type environment you can think of. Any of you who have roadraced in the past know the limitations of your tires as you grip through the turns. You've felt that line where traction is about to be lost but the tires are just barely holding on. Get ready to break those limits, cross that line, and enter the world of drifting ...
.....The goal of drifting is to show complete control of your car while maintaining oversteer. Drifting involves navigating a road course while performing controlled slides, or drifts, for the longest possible duration. The difference between drifting and powersliding is that when you are drifting, you are connecting multiple turns in a controlled slide. This is very different from a powerslide, which is usually performed while exiting a turn with the next step being to re-gain traction. When you are drifting, the object is not to regain traction. Instead, show how much control you have over the car while maintaining a loss of traction in an oversteered state. Even if you are on a straighaway, you should be looking for ways to induce oversteer, but stay in control. You know you are drifting when you are entering the turns at much higher speeds than grip roadracing, and the car is already sliding sideways before you approach the turn. You are not drifting if you understeer into a turn, and oversteer out. You are not drifting if you fishtail and then regain traction. You are not drifting just because your rear tires are burning out. You ARE drifting when you maintain a controlled loss of traction, induced by oversteer, through multiple turns.
.....There are basically two types of drifting. The most pupular in the public eye is show drifting. Show drifting is performed on a closed road course in a competition format. Whoever can drift the road course the best, and gets scored highest by the judges, wins the competition. This is not a speed or time sport, but more of a style sport scored by multiple judges. Very similar to what you might find at some Olympic events or even the X-Games. The judges usually have an automotive racing background and they are judging you based on multiple categories such as entry angle, entry speed, drift style, overall look, and ammount of tire smoke. Each of these categories can be composed by multiple components. For instace, style can include your showmanship to the crowd by putting your arm out the window (to show you only need one hand), your courage for getting extra close to that wall, or your agressiveness for entering the drift extremely early. Overall look can include things like the appearance of your car, the sound, your overall image, etc. It is recommended that you contact your local event coordinators and ask what their judging criteria is. But some of you won't have local events, and thats when you might come across race drifting. Race drifting usually takes place in a battle format. One drifter will battle the other drifter in skill and speed. This can happen on a closed road course, but more often than not, it takes place on public mountain roads. Battle format means one drifter starts behind the other drifter and they chase eachother performing tandem drifts. The goal for the person in the back is to keep up with the person in front. If the person in front cannot pull away, then the person in the back wins. But if the person in the front is not drifting, then he automatically looses. After one battle, the roles are usually reversed for a rematch. This can go on and on until one driver repeatedly pulls away from the other driver showing he can maintain a faster speed while drifting. Much like street racing, the winner gets nothing more than self gratification. Power//slideways does not support street drifting, but we recognize that it takes place. We encourage everyone who is interested in drifting to support legal drifting events, be it show drifting or race drifting. Keep it safe guys!!
