Last Sunday morning, we went for a sunny drive via the MRR2 highway to the Shah Alam to watch the special motorsport event. It was a Autocross or (Autokhana by the Japanese) competition held here at front of Shah Alam’s Stadium organized by GRA (Grass Racing Autosport). It was a hot sunny day and the car participated from amateur to pro category line up to make a quick run. I was surprised, this year the event participated with a lot of various car carmakers such as Proton, Perodua, Subaru, Lotus, Toyota, Mitsu and many more. The event open for public and spectators can have a spectacular full view of the course at the hill side.
Autocross is a "Time Trial" style competitions; there is no wheel to wheel racing involved, as cars are sent out one at a time, or at least spaced out so that they should not come into any contact with each other. These events are derived from the original Gymkhana competitions from 50s and 60s. Today, an event called a Gymkhana is usually a "fun" event, with slow speeds and silly tricks. An event called an Autocross is usually a serious competition, with speeds perhaps as much as 100kmh in large parking lots.In general, a course is laid out using traffic cones; time penalties will charged for disturbing cones.
This particular event, a fully loaded proton Satria 1.6 drive by Gina Finanza entered as a pro class. Radical society is one of the supporting partners with Yard Speedwork for the Proton Satria ‘Lady Bug’. Before every run, Sutan , her personal trainer gave a brief talk in handling at each bends and corners. At the starting grid, Gina’s lady bug queue up to make a run. When the lights turn green, screeching front tires grip the tarmac and hit the first cone 100 meters on a 3rd gear. The are full course with numerous 360-degree turns around cones and courses that loop back upon themselves.
We have present The Lady bug in GRA Autocross here and we’re proud to have found another way to directly support the drivers and the teams. Special thanks to Gina Finanza, Sutan and Yard Speedwork for letting us be part of a great program.
